5 Books to Read with Your Preschooler During National Reading Month
To kick off National Reading Month, our schools are celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2 for a fun-filled day of literacy activities. Students will read and reenact their favorite books, write their own stories, and play dress up.
Below are five age-appropriate books to continue the celebration with your child at home.
Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell (ages 0-1)
This silly lift-the-flap book will be one of your child’s favorites. He’ll love looking at the brightly colored illustrations of zoo animals, including a lion, a monkey, and an elephant. It’s a short and simple story that will keep your little one’s attention time and time again.
Belly Button Book by Sandra Boynton (ages 1-2)
What could be cuter than hippos who love showing off their belly buttons?! Read this rhyming board book with your toddler and encourage him to help flip the pages and point to his own belly button.
The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown (ages 2-3)
First published in 1942, this classic, heartwarming story of a mother’s conditional love has been a favorite among generations of families. The little bunny loves playing hide and seek with his mother, who finds him every time. It’s a great book to read as we’re entering the spring season.
Duck in the Truck by Jez Alborough (ages 3-4)
This fun story is filled with rhymes about a duck whose truck is stuck in the muck. With the power of teamwork from a sheep in a Jeep and a goat in a boat, he’s able to get unstuck.
If You Give a Moose a Muffin by Laura Numeroff (ages 4+)
Your child will enjoy this funny story about what might happen if you give a hungry moose a muffin. The book will bring lots of laughs as it teaches valuable lessons including consequences and cause and effect.
